Sheep wool is a renewable, biodegradable insulation made from treated natural fleece. It performs comparably to mineral wool for warmth, but its real strength is moisture handling: wool can absorb and release humidity without losing thermal performance, which helps keep the roof structure dry.
That makes it particularly well suited to older properties, timber roofs, and any loft prone to condensation. It is naturally fire-resistant, pleasant to handle, and does not irritate the skin the way some materials can.
Sheep wool is a premium natural product, so it typically costs more than standard mineral wool. Where budget is the priority we will always tell you honestly whether it is worth it for your loft, or whether Knauf wool would serve you just as well.
For the same depth the thermal performance is very close. We lay it to the same recommended 270mm so you get a comparable result, with the added benefit of natural moisture regulation.
Modern sheep wool insulation is treated to protect against pests and is perfectly safe to use in a domestic loft.
If your loft suffers from condensation, or you want a natural product in a period home, it can be well worth it. For a standard dry loft, mineral wool is usually the better value — we will advise honestly.
